Identifying VMware Growth and Sprawl

Virtualization has helped the IT industry deploy servers faster than ever before. While a fast turn around time may be critical to meet short term business needs, how fast is too fast? With ease of deployment comes a new challenge, keeping track of the ever increasing population of virtual machines and reporting on the growth of your virtualization enterprise and clusters.

PERFMAN’s VMware solution provides web-based reports to help pinpoint unwanted server proliferation while at the same time allowing you to see the growth of your virtualized environment and help plan for the future.

Below we show examples of the information contained in PERFMAN’s Growth Analysis Report.

Whether it is a cluster or enterprise view, PERFMAN tracks your virtual machine growth over days, weeks or years to help you quickly see how your environment is growing and if it is growing at the rate expected (Figure 1).

Are virtual machines being unknowingly allocated and consuming valuable resources and software licenses?

VMware Growth Analysis

It is important to have insight into your environment to see how many virtual machines have been allocated but not turned on. With ease of server deployment we find that many IT enterprises start allocating virtual machines and resources that either never get turned on or are forgotten once decommissioned. Below you will see an enterprise report showing the number of virtual machines currently allocated but turned off. This allows you to track the growth of your environment and help limit waste of valuable business resources (Figure 2).

Further breakdown of growth and statistics is also provided for each ESX server in the cluster or enterprise (figure 3). The table below provides drill down capability to investigate each ESX server’s allocation, growth and performance (figure 4).

Each ESX server is then broken down by virtual guest to provide a quick overview of each machine’s allocation, state, general statistics and configuration (Figure 5).
