Identifying the Root Cause of a Run-Away CPU in VMware

How quickly can you find the root cause of a suspected run-away CPU on a VMware ESX Server?

PERFMAN Pointview provides complete insight into ESX guest operating systems.  When abnormal behavior is detected on your ESX server you need an efficient means of determining root cause.

In the image below we show total capacity broken down by each VMware guest on our ESX Server.  We identified that the guest VCenter1.4 is consuming an abnormal amount of CPU usage.  In fact, we have detected that it has run away with one of the 4 CPUs on the ESX Server.

What application(s) is consuming our resources?

PointView

PointView allows easy drill down by linking the information reported by the ESX server to the data gathered from the guest operating system.  It allows us to quickly discover that our guest operating system is using 100% of its CPU (25% of our 4-core machine) and the applications responsible for the consumption are vmaService and vpxd.
